Little, Big Bang in Brooklyn
for Ciara
There ain’t no light years,
to trace back billions of years,
across galaxies forming–
or around black holes.
We’ve got no need for fancy satellites,
or all that crazy math
to peer back
over the shoulder of time.
We already know the exact clock-tick,
that it happened–
like a sudden thunderclap
right here, in Brooklyn.
But, just like astronomers
will never really know
what kickstarted
the big, big version,
nor poets arrange
flowers in such a way
as to define the exact
nature of love,
we’ll probably never
completely unravel
the cosmic force
between us.
What I do know is this:
I only have to open my eyelids
to see you,
to feel the pull of my heart,
and then, to let them fall shut,
to know that underneath it all,
I just really, really hope
that our tiny universe
will keep on expanding.
